Judge Declines To Take Further Action Of Samsung’s Leaked Info Against Apple, Apple Still Cries Foul

As Apple and Samsung continue to go back and forth in their respectful disagreements with one another, Apple was dealt an irrelevant small setback. If you recall, Apple and Judge Lucy Koh
weren’t too pleased that Sammy released confidential court information to the media and both wouldn’t allow Sammy to use clever movie clips either. As a result, Apple requested Judge Koh lay the smackdown on Sammy— which Judge Koh seriously considered. However, after some deliberations and interviewing jury members to see if they were affected by the leaked information, Judge Koh decided to abstain from any further action regarding this. Apparently four jurors saw the leaked info and claimed it wasn’t a problem at all with themselves. Still, Judge Koh expressed her desire for all the jurors to not read any further information about the leaks and she is quoted as saying this for her reasoning:

“Those remedies are not warranted by the current record. I will not let any theatrics or sideshow distract us from what we are here to do.”

Despite all that, Apple still claims that the leaked information as well as the subsequent Samsung devices has affected the company as a whole. Apple’s marketing lead Phil Schiller
claims Samsung’s design thefts has hurt Apple’s overall profits:

“I was pretty shocked at the appearance of the Galaxy S phone and the extent to which it copied (Apple products,)… I absolutely believe it’s had an impact on our sales.”

Not sure of what to make of this latest development, but just when you all think it can’t get any messier— it gets a little messier folks.

Study finds that Google’s Nexus 7 commercial is more effective than Apple’s new ads

If you watch TV regularly or if you like to read tech blogs, you are probably aware of two ad campaigns from two major technology companies that have been airing for the last weeks.

First, Google has launched a minute-long commercial for its new Nexus 7 tablet, called “Camping”. The spot features a father and his son, spending quality time together, seemingly in the wilderness, accompanied by a Nexus 7 tablet. The two protagonists use the Nexus as a compass, to play some chess on a rainy day, or to read The Little Prince before going to sleep. Overall, the ad conveys a feel-good message, showing how the Nexus 7 can make life better for its users.

Here’s Google’s Camping spot:

The second major campaign is Apple’s “Genius” series of ads, which feature a young Apple Store Genius that helps out hapless people use their Apple products. We have a guy that he thinks he bought a Mac (it’s actually a PC, imagine the horror), an exec that needs to prepare a presentation on his MacBook to get back in his wife’s good books, and a father that wants to document the birth of his child,  by using off course, Apple apps. Apple’s three new ads were panned across the web, and some even went so far as to call them embarrassing and dumb. The main gripe seems to be that Apple always boasted that its devices are easy to use, which is the complete opposite of the pitch in the Genius campaign.

Check out Apple’s new ads yourself.

A study by Ace Metrix, a company that specializes in measuring the effectiveness of ads, has found that Google’s commercial has been received better than Apple’s campaign. Of the three Genius ads, only one managed a score in the upper half of Ace Metrix’s effectiveness scale. Google’s ad had a better impact, with Ace Metrix giving it a score of 662 out of 950. For comparison, before the Genius campaign, Apple’s commercials scored an average of 620.

Which ad is your favorite? Do you like Google’s Camping commercial? Do you think that the negative reaction to Apple’s ads is exaggerated? Let us know!

Samsung won’t be able use footage from ’2001: A Space Odyssey’ as evidence in trial against Apple

I’m no lawyer, but what’s the deal with Judge Lucy Koh? First she rules that Samsung is unable to use evidence that clearly shows they were working on designs that resembled the iPhone back in 2006, and now she ruled that Samsung can’t use footage from the movie, “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

As you know “2001: A Space Odyssey” features a tablet well before the iPad was even thought of let alone designed. I assume the reason why Koh keeps refusing these exhibits is because this case isn’t about refuting Apple’s patents. It’s on whether Samsung infringed on them or not. The fact that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office should have or shouldn’t have granted these patents is not on the table.

Apple iPad Outsells Android Tablets 2 To 1

As the Android platform continues to grow in consumer’s eyes, so does the number of devices out there such as tablets. According to Strategy Analytics, Android tablets achieved an estimated 7.3 million sales for Q2 2012, which brings it to a market share of 29.3 percent and helps the platform to maintain its position as the 2nd leading type of tablet in the market. The first? Apple’s iPad which achieved 17 million sales for the quarter and gained a market share of 68.3 percent. Analyst Neil Mawston offered some insights on the iPad’s dominance over Android tablets:

“Despite high expectations for companies like Amazon, Samsung, Acer and Asus, the Android community has yet to make a serious dent in Apple’s dominance of the tablet market. Unspectacular hardware designs, limited uptake of cellular models and a modest number of tablet-optimized services have been among some of the main reasons for Android’s mixed performance so far.”
While it’s exciting to see the growth of Android tablets, it’s insights like the one above that demonstrate Android tablets have a whole lot of catching up to do.

The iPhone 5: What We Know So Far

As of January, Apple was reportedly gearing up to begin production on the iPhone 5. A source from within China’s Foxconn manufacturing plant told 9 to 5 Mac that various different sample iPhone prototypes were floating around the floor, but there were a number of common features among the phones, including displays that measure at least 4 inches, and longer and wider form factors that do not match that of the iPhone 4 or 4S. The iPhone 5 will reportedly retain the rectangular shape of its predecessors, which would put to bed rumors of a thinner teardrop shape.

2012 iPhone 5 Info / Rumor Update

It has been quite a while since we have heard anything substantial about the iPhone 5, but we have some information for you. Below is a list of all of the events and details that we know of to date.
First off, the phone is to be released in mid 2012 at Apples Worldwide Developer Event which takes place in June. The iPhone 5 is thought to have a new design that features a larger screen- some say as large as 5 inches. However, the rumor is that Steve Jobs did not like the big screen and did away with it. The interesting thing is that Sony has sent out a top secret shipment of screens to Apple- we just have to wait and see how big they are!
The processor is a Quad Core that is based on the designs made up by ARM. In all likelihood it will be called the A6. The funny thing is that there are some other phones that already have this processor technology which means that it is not that cutting edge.
