Pantech Star Q Coming to Verizon 4G LTE Soon

The successor to last years Pantech Breakout, the Pantech Star Q, will be coming to Verizon’s 4G LTE network soon for a low price of $99 on contract.

The device will have Android 4.0.4, a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, a 4? WVGA (800 x 480) display, a 3MP rear camera, a front-facing camera, a 5-row QWERTY keyboard and Bluetooth 4.0. It’s cool too see that the device will have Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and the Snapdragon S4 processor, but the display and camera resolution is pretty disappointing. Obviously this isn’t a high end device like the Galaxy S III, but I at least expected a decent camera since 8MP has been the standard for most devices lately.

It hasn’t been said when the device will hit stores but with Verizon’s current low-end slider phones, the LG Enlighten and Samsung Stratosphere, the Pantech Star Q will make a nice addition to the lineup and should show up soon. The device definitely won’t attract hardcore fans, but it should attract a decent amount of people with it’s low $99 price point.

Does the Pantech Star Q interest you at all? For $99 I would personally rather go with the HTC One X or Atrix HD. Let us know in the comments below!

Samsung SCH-R940 Galaxy S Lightray 4G headed to MetroPCS

According to the FCC, the Samsung SCH-R940 Galaxy S Lightray 4G (yet another mouthful of a name) will be heading to MetroPCS. According to the FCC filings the device will offer a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, an 8-megapixel camera with LED flash on its back, a 1.3MP FFC, a 16GB microSD expandable memory slot, 4G LTE connectivity and will likely include a single-core 1.3 GHz processor (likely the first-gen Hummingbird).

This device looks eerily similar to the Verizon Samsung Droid Charge that came out over a year ago. It’s easy to assume that it’s the same device with a re-brand considering the specs are identical and looks almost exactly the same.

Sadly, this will ship with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and not Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean. This device is slated for a release sometime in the middle of August.

Samsung’s ChatON app updated, includes Olympic Buddy and other new features

Samsung’s instant messaging client, ChatON, has been updated with several new features. If you’re not familiar with ChatON, it’s similar to other messaging clients like Kik and GroupMe that are also quite popular on Android.

ChatON’s most notable new feature would have to be the addition of Olympic Buddy that will keep you updated in this year’s 2012 London Olympics. You will be kept up to date with daily schedules, medal tables and breaking news. If you’d like another option to keep up with this years Olympics, you can also check our coverage on the official Olympics app.

Here’s the official changelog of ChatON version 1.9.5 after the break:

To be honest, this is the first time I’ve heard about this app. I’m more familiar with GroupMe and Kik as I’ve used both in the past. These new additions to ChatON should definitely bring some new users to the platform. What group messaging application do you guys tend to use?

Motorola Infringes on Microsoft’s FAT patent, German Android Devices Banned

The Mannheim Regional Court has ruled in Microsoft’s favor regarding the FAT patent. What is FAT? FAT stands for File Allocation Table, a legacy file system still widely used, mostly for backward compatibility. The German court has granted a request for a ban on all relevant devices, according to Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents. Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel, David Howard had this to say.

“Today’s decision, which follows similar rulings in the U.S. and Germany, is further proof that Motorola Mobility is broadly infringing Microsoft’s intellectual property. We will continue to enforce injunctions against Motorola Mobility products in those countries and hope they will join other Android device makers by taking a license to Microsoft’s patented inventions.”

Motorola will have to remove all infringing products from retail and Microsoft will be entitled to an undetermined amount in damages. However, in order to enforce the injunction, Microsoft will need to pay a €10 million bond. Microsoft says the injunction affects all Android devices that use FAT on internal storage, such as the Atrix, Razr and Razr Maxx. Microsoft further explains that the decision bolsters the injuntion it was awarded on May 24th.

“We already have an injunction against Motorola products in Germany as a result of a ruling on May 24, and today’s ruling serves to strengthen this injunction. In the long term, if Motorola wishes to sell products on the German market, it must either take a license or stop using the technology covered by our patents including the ones at issue in this week’s decisions.”

I have said this before and I will say it forever: Why can’t these companies just win with better products than the other? Probably a pipe dream, but one can hope! I mean, I understand protecting your property, but is there a point where it gets a little overboard? This poses another question: Why didn’t Motorola gain proper licensing? As the quote says “…it must either take a license…” So what’s the issue? Get permission and keep rockin’! Let us know what you think in the comments!

Asphalt 7 Turns Up the Heat as it Hits the Google Play Store

You’ve been waiting for it, and it’s finally here! Asphalt 7: Heat officially hit the Google Play store today and for only one dollar! That’s right folks, $1 is all it takes to get your hands on the 7th edition of Gameloft’s popular racing series.
With claims of 60 licensed cars and over 150 races in 15 leagues, this all points to a very serious experience. And since I already told you the price, you know it’s worth it! Gameloft also mentions a revamped multiplayer, you are able to play with up to 6 racers competing at once, and who said gaming can’t be social!? Asphalt 7 boasts some very nice graphical touches like reflections and lens flare, although if you are an owner of a shiny Tegra powered device, you won’t notice any graphical enhancements. Now, with that said, Asphalt 7 is said to work on most devices running Android 2.2 and up. I looked in the list of devices I’ve owned and the Asus Transformer TF101 is listed as unsupported, although, I haven’t confirmed this. Be aware, Asphalt 7: Heat is 1.4GB in size, so make sure you have a decent connection before attempting to download it.
I love racing games, I am currently playing through Gran Turismo 5 on PS3 and it’s stunning, so when I sit down with a racing game on my phone, I kinda expect it to me pretty darn good. To be honest with you, I have never had that experience on any Android racing game. Since it’s only one dollar, I downloaded Asphalt 7: Heat and will let you know what I think!

Sprint Galaxy Nexus update removes local search function

As reported earlier today, Sprint began rolling out an update for the Galaxy Nexus phone. Likely requiring a few days to reach all devices, the update modifies the received signal strength indicator (RSSI), adds support for Sprint TV, and adjusts LTE settings to default to “on.” The update does a little more than that though – it removes local search capability.
For those jumping into the saga at this point, the local search capability refers to the ability to search contacts or files on the phone using the same search box one would use to do a search of the web. This capability has become the focus of a legal battle involving Apple, who obtained a preliminary injunction blocking sales of the Galaxy Nexus.  The solution for carriers and the manufacturer, Samsung, has been to disable local search until the litigation is resolved.
Followers of the lawsuit are probably not surprised by this move by Sprint. They may be surprised that Sprint did not disclose this part of the update.

Official Nexus 7 Cover Now Available in the Google Play Store

We’ve been keeping an eye out for the official Nexus 7 cover to become available in the Google Play store and today they finally landed. Only available in dark grey, a new case for your N7 is going to set you back just over $30 depending on your local tax. This includes $19.99 for the unit, $9.99 for 2-day shipping, and a few bucks for uncle Sam. It seems a little pricey after all is said and done but it could very well be worth it to have some custom fitting protection. We will get ours in a few days so stay tuned for some feedback. Heck, if a few of you are interested, I could even throw a quick video together showing you how it looks/works on the tablet. In the meantime, if you already know you want one, hit up the source link below.

Motorola PHOTON Q to hit shelves with unlockable bootloader

Motorola appears to have awakened to user requests for more control over their smartphones in the form of an unlockable bootloader. On their blog today, Motorola announced that they have worked with their partners to respond to market demand for unlockable bootloaders. The fruits of these efforts will first appear with the Motorola PHOTON Q 4G LTE coming to the Sprint network which will have an unlockable bootloader. The final comment on the blog post indicates Motorola will “be looking to offer this option on other devices as well” moving forward. So it seems we can expect to see this capability of new phones in the future. However, a tweet from Motorola Mobility indicates they will not try to apply this retroactively to devices already on the market.
Like ASUS and HTC, the expectation is that phones will be delivered in a locked state, but a tool will be made available for users wanting to unlock their bootloader. Use of the tool will likely void their device’s warranty. Watch for further details as users get their hands on the PHOTON Q.

Apple iPad Outsells Android Tablets 2 To 1

As the Android platform continues to grow in consumer’s eyes, so does the number of devices out there such as tablets. According to Strategy Analytics, Android tablets achieved an estimated 7.3 million sales for Q2 2012, which brings it to a market share of 29.3 percent and helps the platform to maintain its position as the 2nd leading type of tablet in the market. The first? Apple’s iPad which achieved 17 million sales for the quarter and gained a market share of 68.3 percent. Analyst Neil Mawston offered some insights on the iPad’s dominance over Android tablets:

“Despite high expectations for companies like Amazon, Samsung, Acer and Asus, the Android community has yet to make a serious dent in Apple’s dominance of the tablet market. Unspectacular hardware designs, limited uptake of cellular models and a modest number of tablet-optimized services have been among some of the main reasons for Android’s mixed performance so far.”
While it’s exciting to see the growth of Android tablets, it’s insights like the one above that demonstrate Android tablets have a whole lot of catching up to do.

Apple gets a stay on publicly admitting that Samsung didn’t copy the iPad

Remember last week when we told you that UK judge Colin Birss ordered Apple to post on their UK website that Samsung didn’t copy the iPad? I knew it had to be too good to be true because just like that Apple was granted a stay. Apple was not only supposed to post this on their website for a period of six months, but also had to advertise it in British newspapers and magazines. Apple argued that they didn’t want to advertise for Samsung and the stay was granted.
What does this mean? Well it doesn’t mean that Apple is out of the water, but they won’t have to do anything till at least October when the appeal will be heard. I will be shocked if Judge Colin Birss’ earlier decision holds up, but am hopeful.

NFC could be the next big security exploit

Everyone is looking for something to put fear into people and the latest is NFC. Security researcher Charlie Miller recently showed flaws in the way Android (and MeeGo) handles NFC. He designed an NFC tag that was able to execute malicious code on a device. Obviously this tag could be place anywhere like a point-of-sale terminal.
The issue is not NFC in general, but more of the software implementation. The Android Beam specification allows NFC to automatically launch the web browser which allows for a wide range of web-based exploits. A lot of the browser bugs that were in older versions of Android have been fixed, but early Ice Cream Sandwich builds still have a lot of security holes related to the WebKit-based stock browser. A simple fix to this would be a pop up notifying the user that NFC is trying to open the browser and to either give or deny permission.
Older Android phones are still an issue in that Miller was able to hijack the application daemon that controls NFC functions in Android 2.3, in a sense bypassing the browser. Thankfully there really isn’t too many devices on Android 2.3 that have NFC. Miller used a Nexus S to demonstrate.
So there you have it folks. Is this the next big scare? I would assume Google will make software fixes accordingly, but the bottomline is that for anyone to exploit your phone (or tablet) with this method, they have to be really close to you.

Sprint Galaxy Nexus Gets Software Update Rolling Out Starting Today, And No… The Update Doesn’t Include Jelly Bean

The Sprint Galaxy Nexus smartphone is looking to get just a little bit better with an incoming software version L700.FG01 update that’s set to roll out starting today. Before you ask—- no the update doesn’t include Android 4.1 just yet, but does include the ability to modify the device’s received signal strength indicator (RSSI), add support for Sprint TV and Wi-Fi and LTE settings will now default to being turned on.
While the update will roll out starting today, it may take several additional days before it reaches all Sprint Galaxy Nexus owners, so sit tight and relax if you don’t see it right away.

New Odin-less root method for Verizon’s Galaxy S III

Over at the XDA Developers’ forum, member Noxious Ninja has come up with a new method to root a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III.  This new method was based on a desire to get around some issues users were having after using a previously developed root method. He also hoped to be able to produce something that didn’t require flashing ROMs. In the end, Noxious Ninja was able to modify a root method for an Asus TF300T to work on the Galaxy S III. Going a step further, he has even created a tool for users that don’t want to follow the manual steps. Users are warned that the tool is considered beta. The usual disclaimers about rooting devices apply, so proceed at your own risk if you are interested in giving it a try. Just follow the source link for the files and instructions. Nexus Q Stock Sold Out? Once Again Shipping in 2-3 Weeks

It was only a couple days ago that Google’s Nexus Q was finally listed as “in stock” from the Google Play store and in a blink of an eye she’s gone again. Whether the demand was so high that stock was drained almost overnight or there was some sort of production glitch, either way, the social media streamer is once again listed as shipping “soon.”  If you have been holding out on ordering a new Nexus Q it looks like you are going to have to wait another 2-3 weeks for shipping if you decide to bite the bullet any time soon. In the meantime, if you haven’t made up your mind on whether or not the Q is for you, you should check out our full hands-on review and we’ll be sure to let you know once more stock becomes available.

Sony LT30p ‘Mint’ Smartphone Outed and Outlined

While Sony has been quietly at work developing devices like the LT29i, we now see other devices it’s had up its sleeve in full fruition. A complete preview of a device called the LT30p (also known as ‘Mint’) has surfaced and gives Sony fans a look of what will be Sony’s next premium smartphone. The Sony LT30p will feature Android 4.0 and have a 4.6-inch (1280 x 720) display with on-screen buttons, 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 chipset, 1GB RAM, 13MP camera capable of 1080p video recording, 720p front facing camera, 16GB of internal memory, microSD, MHL output, NFC and a sealed battery.
The overall design of the smartphone looks to be a bit on the lackluster side, but the hope is what you see will not be the final design. After all— all those premium goodies should be featured in a premium design, right?

Amazon Kindle Fire To Be Reduced To $169 After Kindle Fire 2 Launches?

This is hardly a surprise, but DealNews is reporting that Amazon’s Kindle Fire will experience a price drop to $169 after the new Kindle Fire 2 launches later this year. Amazon has a history of keeping older kindles around, at lower price points, when newer ones are released. According to DealNews, the Kindle Fire 2 will slide into the $199 price point.
This tactic is similar to how Apple positions its older iPads and iPhones when new versions come out. The strategy allows one manufacturer to cover multiple price levels, increasing their potential audience.
Of course, Amazon is now forced to compete with Google’s popular Nexus 7 tablet, which is leaps and bounds ahead of the original Kindle Fire spec-wise but still costs just $199. Sales forecasts for the original Fire have already been cut due to the Nexus 7′s success. Reducing the original Fire to $169 and launching the Fire 2 at $199 would essentially allow Amazon to compete with the Nexus 7 on two fronts.
Looks like the era of low-cost and genuinely usable tablets is here, folks. This is the kind of competition that helps drive innovation. Even big bully and litigious Apple will be getting in the smaller tablet game with their rumored iPad Mini, but I doubt theirs will be under two bills.

Motorola Xoom WiFi Soak Test Confirms What We Already Knew: Update Includes Android 4.1.1 And All That Buttery Goodness

Well friends, the unofficial Nexus Google Developer tablet has just become a whole lot smoother and buttery. How, you ask? You all remember how we told you about a certain colorful, yet buttery test run that was imminent for certain Motorola Xoom owners? Well the test run has begun and according to our sources, the new update is being pushed to owners of the device which confirms what we already knew, Jelly Bean is officially on the Xoom WiFi. The update includes the latest Jelly Bean version (Android version 4.1.1) and the software build for the Xoom update is known as JRO03H— while coming in at a moderate 79MB in size. While it might be too early to call, our source confirms Android 4.1 does have a slightly tweaked appearance like new fonts in addition to the smoother transitions in the UI. It looks like Jelly Bean has gotten a new lease on life with the 79MB update! No word yet on when the formal release will be pushed, but it looks like it won’t be too long before other Xoom owners get that Jelly Bean lovin’.

Samsung Rolls Out New Update For International Version Of The Galaxy S III, Quietly Removes Local Search Function In The Process

Hot off the heels of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus fiasco, it seems as if Apple has indirectly had its way again, this time seen in a recent OTA update for the international version of the Samsung Galaxy S III (I9300 model). Following suit of the Stateside models from carriers like AT&T and Sprint, reports are coming in that Samsung is pushing out an update which includes the new software version is known as XXBLG6, while the baseband included is identified as XXLG6 for the international model. In addition, OTA on the smartphone identifies itself as a “stability update”, but reports indicate the update also removes local (on device) search functions within the phone’s built-in Google Search app. It’s a bummer, I know.
While the update seems to have removed one of the most underrated functions seen in the Galaxy S III, there is no doubt the dev community will be working on a mod or hack to bring the feature back. Still, it is a major, major disappointment for the few people who did take advantage of the cool feature.
The 27MB update is available now through OTA or Kies Desktop software so I9300 users can grab it anytime now. Or of course— you can just hold off on it and you know, keep the local search feature for a little while longer.

Verizon’s LG VS930 Renders Leaked: It’s The LG Spectrum 2

The sources over at TechnoBuffalo have leaked renders of the LG VS930, which we already saw pass through the FCC. The source also confirms that this is in fact the LG Spectrum 2, destined for Verizon. So what are the specs we know of?
4.7-inch “True HD IPS” display (1280 x 720)
1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 SoC
1GB of RAM
8MP rear camera
16GB of built-in storage
Global radio support (GSM/UMTS/CDMA/LTE)
NFC (with programmable tags)
Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich
9.2mm thick
Yes, this is a global phone with support for not only Verizon’s CDMA and 4G LTE, but also for GSM and UMTS. That’s a versatile little sucker.
No news for when this will launch. Any jetsetters waiting for this one?

ZTE N880E to relaunch with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in China

Today ZTE announced they will re-release the ZTE N880E. This is the first device in China (third in the world) to launch with pure 4.1 Jelly Bean, and just days after Jelly Bean was launched into the wild.
Back in May, the N880E launched with 2.3 Gingerbread and has already sold more then one million units. This could be why ZTE is relaunching, pure popularity…or it could be about marketing, but we can only speculate on the intentions of the relaunch. ZTE has said they have a very solid relationship with Google and will continue to release Jelly Bean devices. Based on their relationship, I’m very curious to see how ZTE got their hands on Google’s new PDK.
The specs of the N880E are not very impressive at all: 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, a 4 inch WVGA display, a 3.2MP camera, 4GB of internal storage, and a 1,650mAh battery. Like I said, nothing special, but I’m sure Chinese natives will be pumped to get their hands on some Jelly Beans goodness.

Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi Soak Test To Begin Tonight: Jelly Bean Incoming?

We already knew about the upcoming Motorola Xoom soak test and now we have confirmation that it will begin very soon… possibly as soon as tonight. Members of the Motorola Feedback Network are receiving emails that pretty much state that it’s coming any time now. Though the email does not specifically state this is the Jelly Bean update, our sources tell us that it is. Of course, that should not be a surprise to anyone considering the Xoom is pretty much a Nexus device (without the Nexus name) getting updates directly from Google.

Leaked Image Shows Verizon Galaxy Nexus Due to Receive another ICS Update

Looks like the Verizon Galaxy Nexus will receive an OTA update soon. Update “IMM76Q” is still Ice Cream Sandwhich but looks to bring a new baseband and software version. Any other news regarding this would be speculation, although, we think Verizon may be removing unified search results to avoid conflict with Apple.
In addition, you may have already seen the IMM76Q tag somewhere, that’s because its been rumored for about a month. One user reported getting a prompt to install the update, curious, others went to Verizon and Samsung and were told this is to address signal drop issues for subscribers in specific areas.
We know you want your Jelly Bean, that is unless you have already rooted  . If you haven’t, keep in mind, it makes sense for Verizon to push patches to tidy up a bit before a major software update. With that said, we’ll keep you posted the moment we learn more!

Verizon Galaxy S III To Receive Update to VRLG1, Removes Unified Search and Updates Kernel

If you are a Verizon subscriber and own a Samsung Galaxy S III, you may be receiving an update soon. This is meant to update the kernel and to dumb down the search capabilities of the device. As we have already seen, Samsung has been pushing the same update to both the Sprint and AT&T Galaxy S III.
When we talk about “dumbing down search capabilities” this is what you should expect. Currently, when you search via the search bar, it returns results from the web, apps, contacts, etc. all in a unified manner. However, with the current Apple Vs. Samsung debacle, search results will be limited to the web with no localized results.
If you are having any issues with your S III and get a replacement, your new device will already have been updated to I535VRLG1. The same is expected for those who go out and purchase one today. However, for those of you who jumped on the sale during launch week, we haven’t heard any news of the OTA hitting, but will update you as soon as we know!

Photo Of Sprint’s Upcoming LG “Cayenne” LS860 QWERTY Slider Leaked

A couple of months ago we covered an upcoming QWERTY slider known as the LG Cayenne (LS860) that is heading to Sprint. Today, a new photo of that device obtained by evleaks has surfaced and shows us 3 physical capacitive buttons and running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The device will contain a dual-core MSM9860 Snapdragon S4 processor, which we all know by now is no slouch. The disappointing part is that the device will sport a WVGA resolution. The least they could have paired it with was qHD, especially since it already has such a powerful processor in the Snapdragon S4.
Either way, I’m sure this device will find its niche of users as physical QWERTY sliders aren’t quite dead yet and still sought after.  No news on pricing or availability, but you can be sure that we’ll fill you in as soon as we learn more.

Could the Galaxy Note II sport a 1.6Ghz quad-core Exynos processor?

What exactly is the Samsung GT-N7100? I’ll tell you what we know. We know that it has a Exynos 4412 processor with Mali 400 graphics, we also know that the screen resolution is 1280 x 720 with a 16:9 aspect ratio and finally we know that the device is currently running Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. The reason we know all of this is that a device labelled GT-N7100 has appeared on GLBenchmark listing the aforementioned specifications.
So why do we think the GT-N7100 could be the Galaxy Note II? The first reason is that the GT-N7000 is the original Galaxy Note so following typical Samsung numbering, the GT7100 would suggest the follow up device. Still not convinced? The new aspect ratio points to a screen size greater than 5.5″. Perhaps we’ve taken 2 + 2 and come out with 5 however I believe the GT-N7100 will indeed turn out to be the Galaxy Note II.
Keep tuned in to TalkAndroid as we bring you updates on the Galaxy Note II as they break.

Xperia GX Visits The FCC, LTE And Pentaband 3G On Board

Back in May, Sony gave us a glimpse of the spiritual successor to the Xperia Arc, dubbed the Xperia GX. This 4.6-inch phone will bring with it a 13MP camera, dual-core 1.5 GHz CPU, 16GB of storage, and LTE. The GX has just gone through the FCC and we learned one more thing about it. It will also be sporting a pentaband 3G radio capable of HSPA speeds. Not a bad fallback if no LTE is available.
Other than that juicy tidbit, the FCC filing doesn’t really reveal anything new. Hit the source link below for the details.

LG Spectrum’s Ice Cream Sandwich Update Ready To Go, Awaiting Verizon’s Approval

Keep an eye on our “Company Updates” which shows up on the home page
It’s getting very close…can’t wait to get the official word to post it! I think we’re just waiting on Verizon to set a FOTA schedule.

SDK for Android 4.1 is now available

Google released the Android 4.1 SDK today and it is now available for download. Included with the SDK are revised versions of SDK Tools (20.1.1) and NDK revision 8b. The new tools will let developers publish code up to API level 16 using Jelly Bean APIs. As usual, the SDK is available for Windows, Mac and Linux platforms.  The SDK and related tools can be installed via an existing installation of the SDK or one can head over to the Android Developers’ web site.
Nick Butcher, an Android engineer who announced the release on the Android Developers blog, also provided some hints and recommendations to improve the level of polish and professional presentation for new Jelly Bean apps. The advice is provided as a way to help developers get a jump start on app development that goes beyond just working, especially since this will likely be developers’ first exposure to Jelly Bean. The tips and tricks are geared toward the Google Nexus 7, but should translate to other devices over time.
Follow the source link to read up on Butcher’s suggestions and to access the SDK on the developers’ web site.

As users with Google’s new Nexus 7 tablet are figuring out, when setting up the device to access the Play Store, Google is providing a $25 credit for registering. But the good times don’t stop there. If you do a factory reset of the device and register a new account, including providing valid credit card information, an additional $25 credit will be issued by Google.

It is unclear as to whether this is really what Google intended to occur and may be questionable, though not unprecedented, behavior. In any case, if you are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity, you may want to do so as soon as possible in case Google makes a change.

Swiftkey update brings Jelly Bean compatibility

The stock Android keyboard continues to go from strength to strength, the steady progress was further reinforced with a pretty solid update baked into Jelly Bean 4.1. The latest update to the stock keyboard brought with it improved auto-correction as well as a nifty auto-prediction feature that learns your typing habits and appears to know what you’re writing even before you do. Interestingly enough, we first saw these features over a year ago via replace keyboard extraordinaire SwiftKey. Unless you have a preference for the swipe style keyboard, SwiftKey is the consensus king of the replacement Keyboard and was even the keyboard of choice for this writer; until recently. SwiftKey initially didn’t support Jelly Bean, an issue that the developers have rectified today with a much needed update. The question is, does SwiftKey still offer a Unique Selling Point that will convince the average Android owner to part with their pocket money now that the stock keyboard offers a similar experience?
You can bag the latest update by clicking the link below. Let us know your thoughts on how the new stock keyboard compares to SwiftKey’s latest update in the comments below.

Update To Google Play Music Brings Improved UI, Playing Queue, and More

You may want to check your app updates because Google Play Music just got an awesome new update. This new version comes with a bunch of new improvements and features such as:
Now Playing queue that allows for queuing and reordering of currently playing music.
New UI for navigation with transport controls on the action bar.
New large album art view on Recent.
Playlist art is now constructed from album art of songs in the playlist.
Now Playing widget has album art and support for thumbs up.
Harder, better, faster, stronger.
I’m already loving this new version. The improved UI makes for a cleaner look, the playlist art is a nice new addition, and I’m especially loving the new queuing features. This is definitely much better than previous versions of Google music. Grab the updated version through either of the links below.

Another $199 Quad-Core Tegra 3 Android Tablet… But The Nabi 2 Is For Kids

Looks like Google’s Nexus 7 isn’t the only $199 Tegra 3 quad-core 7-inch Android tablet. Fuhu Inc., makers of the kids nabi tablet, has now come out with the nabi 2 with some pretty decent specs.

  • 7-inch 1024×600 touchscreen
  • 1.3GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 A9 Quad-Core Mobile processor
  • 8GB of storage memory
  • microSD slot
  • Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • 2MP front camera (720p video capture)
  • microUSB port
  • miniHDMI port
  • 4,000mAh battery

Not too shabby, especially for a tablet made specifically for children from pre-K to 5th grade. The nabi 2 comes pre-installed with educational and child-centric entertainment apps, such as Spinlets+ Music (over 19 million kid-friendly songs), and Spinlets+ TV (streaming Saturday morning kids’ shows). You don’t get the Google Play Store (too mature for the target audience) but you get App Zone 2.0,  the “only curated App store made just for kids“. This app store contains over 500 real apps, like Fruit Ninja for example, that are hand picked by moms and dads. Of course, you could always sideload any apps if you really wanted to.
The nabi 2 is now available at  Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and Gamestop, and will be coming to Target and Amazon on July 22.

Sprint-Bound Samsung SPH-L300 LTE Passes Through FCC

The Sprint-bound Samsung SPH-L300 was first whispered about in May, and now it’s finally clearing the FCC. The specs we know about place this handset in the budget to mid-range, and frankly the specs are pretty good for folks looking for something decent that won’t cost an arm and a leg.

  • 4G LTE
  • WVGA display
  • Dual-core Snapdragon S4 MSM8960
  • 1GB RAM
  • 4GB storage

Sure, it’s no Galaxy S III or HTC One X, but it’ll get things done. No word on when it will launch on Sprint, but it can’t be too far off now.

US Launch Of Sony Xperia NXT Series Feels Dated With Gingerbread On Board

We reported last week about Sony’s Xperia NXT series (S, P, and Sola models) coming to the US. Sony announced today that, along with the Xperia S and Xperia P, the Xperia U is now finally available, unlocked and SIM-free, in the States. By “SIM-free”, they actually mean it will only work on AT&T 3G and 4G, so be warned.
Now the issue here is that all three of these phones have been available in Europe for a few months, so they’re not exactly brand new. In fact, they are all still running Android 2.3 Gingerbread. That’s two versions behind Jelly Bean (remember, Honeycomb was a tablet only version). Sure, Sony says that all three phones will be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich, but come on, at the retail prices they’re quoting, we would expect the phones to already be upgraded to at least ICS.
The top of the line in this series is the Xperia S, which comes with a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S3, 1GB RAM, 720p Reality Display, 12MP camera, and 32GB of storage. Decent specs deserving a newer OS than Gingerbread. The S comes with a suggested retail price of $559.99 in black or white.
The Xperia P fills out the mid-range with dual-core 1GHz U8500 chip, qHD screen, and 8MP camera. It also features an aluminum body in silver, red, or black for a suggested retail price of $479.99.
Finally, on the budget side there’s the Xperia U with a dual-core 1 GHz U8500 chip, WVGA display, 5MP camera, and interchangeable, multi-colored bottom caps. The U retails for $299.99 and is available in black or white.
Sorry, Sony, but it’s hard to get excited when phones like the HTC One X or Samsung Galaxy S III are available at much lower carrier-subsidized prices in the US, not to mention the $350 off-contract price of the Galaxy Nexus, which runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
Hit the break for Sony’s full press release.

Verizon closer to releasing LG Optimus Vu

A couple months ago we managed to get our hands on an LG Optimus Vu device at CTIA. The Optimus Vu is one of those devices falling in between a phone and a tablet. With a 5” screen, the Optimus Vu seems destined to be Verizon’s answer to the Samsung Galaxy Note. Follow the source links after the break for images of the Optimus Vu sporting Verizon 4g LTE branding.
The specs for the device do not seem to be too bad on the surface:

5 inch (1024 x 768) IPS LCD display, 4:3 aspect ratio
1.5GHz dual-core processor
32GB internal memory
2,080 mAh battery
8 MP rear camera
8.5mm thick

stylus
Unfortunately, the translation to a useable device is a challenge. The shape, with the 4:3 aspect  ratio, does not lend itself well to a device that will fit in a pocket or be easy to use with two hands. One bright spot is that the Optimus Vu will ship with Ice Cream Sandwich making it unique amongst LG devices in any market outside of Korea.
Does Verizon even stand a chance with the LG Optimus Vu?

Eric Schmidt On Google: ““We Always Wanted To Be In The Hardware Business”

Google head honcho Eric Schmidt recently stopped by the Allen & Company conference in Sun Valley, Idaho to share with the fine folks in the audience Google’s new Nexus 7 and Nexus Q. While offering a show-and-tell of both products, Schmidt took some time to also share Google’s vision for the future and what it has intended to do all along when it comes to the hardware business. Schmidt highlights:

“We always wanted to be in the hardware business. Larry and Sergey have always wanted to do hardware in one form or another. This was a way to get into it quickly.”

While there’s no indication Google is trying to be a hardware company (after all— the company’s foundation is on both its search engine and advertising), Google obviously is looking above and beyond. After all, it has special projects in the making such as the famed Project Glass and lest we forget— it did acquire a certain handset maker last year which Schmidt himself promises will bring “a new batch of products” soon-to-be ready for prime time. Now that we know Eric, Sergey and Larry are clearly working on some goodies behind the scenes, one has to wonder what else the world can be treated to.

Featured Play Store Newbie: Task Radar [Productivity]

There are a slew of apps in the Google Play Store for managing your tasks or to do’s, and for those of you looking for something different, you might want to try Task Radar. It’s only been in the Play Store for a few days and is already getting solid user reviews. Task Radar was developed by SockMonkeySolutions, the same folks who gave us Gift Wizard. It’s touted as the first AI to do list. With a simple shake of your phone, Task Radar will automatically re-order your tasks based on priorities and dates. Another feature that I’ve never seen before is the ability to look at all your incoming deadlines through a radar-like screen.
Task Radar’s UI is gorgeous as it’s developed with ICS guidelines and there are plenty of options when creating a task or to do. Each task gets a deadline date and an impact as is none, low, medium, or high, and each impact is represented by a different color. You can also type in more details about the task and categorize it as work or home. You can view your work or home tasks separately or together. As far as alerts go, you can set each individual task as off or set it to alert you at 8 and 1 hours ahead of the scheduled finish time or 24, 8, and 1 hours ahead.

For a better look of how Task Radar works, check out the video below:

Task Radar is free, but they do have a paid version for $5.01 that removes ads. Just hit one of the links below to get started.
